2023 In Review

What went well, what could have gone better, and what's next.

What’s up, y’all!

Now that 2023 is in the books, I thought it would be interesting to look back over the year and figure out what went well, what could have gone better, and what’s next in 2024.

What Went Well

Whitewater Rafting in Georgia

  • My youngest graduated high school and went off to college.

  • I completed my CLU® designation in March and began my CLF® designation in July.

  • Completed 75Hard.

  • Bitcoin up 150% for the year, retirement portfolio up 21.5%.

  • Resurrected Daveslist.

  • Got back into a daily journaling habit.

  • Traveled a lot for both work and fun; amazing vacation in the Georgia mountains with the family; got to visit my mom in California.

  • Worked 219 days out of the year; ran 217 client meetings and 261 coaching sessions with members of my team.

  • Caught Anthony Jeselnik, Mark Normand, and Garth Brooks live shows.

What Could Have Gone Better

  • Built a bunch of momentum with 75Hard, got down to 224 pounds, and then blew it again. Finished the year at ~245 pounds.

  • Missed a couple of important KPIs at work.

  • Either overestimated what I can achieve in a 3–4-month period or wasn’t committed enough to actually achieve it. Trying to figure out which it is. Probably both.

  • Definitely wasted too much time. Almost certainly wasted too much money. $1,900 on Starbucks is not a reasonable expenditure.

What’s Next for 2024

Snowmobiling in Yellowstone

  • Snowmobiling in Yellowstone with buddies in January.

  • My wife is retiring in August after 38 years with the same employer. It was her first job after graduating college.

  • Birthday trip with friends to Napa in October.

  • Caribbean cruise in December.

  • Still deciding on a trip to Ireland. Haven’t been in 10 years.

  • Limiting my alcohol consumption to 90 days in 2024.

  • Another round of 75Hard.

Final Sunset of 2023

As I finish writing this from the beach on January 1, 2024, I find that I’m really excited to get back to work and see what this year brings. No doubt there will be some turmoil, but there is opportunity in every challenge. I’m looking forward to getting better at a bunch of things I currently suck at. I’m looking forward to time with friends and family, travel, and hitting a couple of major milestones.

From me to you, have a tremendous 2024!

Cheers,
Dave
