The sea is a terrifying temple of solitude, and I say this as someone who has spent a fair amount of his adult life with no shoreline in sight. Solo sailing is not something I particularly enjoy, but some folks love it, or are challenged by it in a way that compels them to set out on their own for long distances. Such was the case with Richard Carr, who at 71 decided to solo circumnavigate. I doubt we’ll ever know what truly happened out there, but it’s clear to me that his demons came along for the ride and the solitude of the journey drove him to the limits of his sanity.
