Why do we share a planet with rat lungworm?

It’s been a while since we’ve discussed Universal Basic Income here on Daveslist, and this week a couple of interesting pieces dropped. Andrew Yang is running for President in 2020 on the platform of UBI. I met him back in April at Collision, and he makes a compelling case. He’s the founder of Venture For America, which operates on the principle that entrepreneurship is the cornerstone of our economy.

This isn’t exactly the opposing view to Andrew Yang’s UBI scheme, but this group of top tech founders believes that UBI is the wrong response to the current race-to-the-bottom on costs. The shift from a task-centered economy to a people-centered economy would be a monumental change in economic thought.

As a parent, this is an unthinkable way to lose a child. As an escargot aficionado, well, let’s just say I’m not anymore.

I’ve always had a dark fascination with psychopathy. Working in finance as long as I have, I’ve known more than my share of sociopaths; it’s practically a requirement for upper management on Wall Street. But psychopathy is something entirely different. I’ve only known one psychopath in my life that I can be sure of, and the fact that he’s still out there (and a cop, no less) disturbs me to this day.

This article goes into the things that separate psychopaths from the rest of us and, again, it is deeply messed up. Definitely worth the read, though.

This one hit pretty close to home, because I haven’t been particularly vigilant about screen time in my house. When the people who created the technology won’t let their own kids go near it, that should tell you something.

At this point, I’ll take any good news I can get about the environment. And here is some real good news: the Ozone Layer is repairing itself at a rapid pace. Readers of a certain age will recall the backlash against aerosol and the damage it was doing to the Ozone Layer. This is convincing proof that the planet will fix itself if humans commit to quit screwing it up.

If you’ve never heard of Big’s Backyard Ultra, it’s basically the pinnacle competition for endurance athletes. The trail is only 4 miles long and isn’t particularly challenging. But you have to run it every hour on the hour until only one runner is left standing. That’s right: a 4-mile run with NO finish line. Courtney Dauwalter is absolutely superhuman, and she’s super cool on top of that (based on the several interviews with her I’ve listened to). This race makes the Moab look like a warmup.
