Ever needed to stay awake so badly you were willing to take your life in your hands?
Let’s get it on…

Apple is just trolling people now.
I have to admit something: Elizabeth Holmes got me. As someone who made a lot of money sniffing out fraud in my years in finance, I bought her story hook, line, and sinker. I probably would have bet the ranch if I’d had the opportunity, and I would have lost it all.
Maybe it was just how badly I wanted it all to be true: the youngest female billionaire, the medical technology that could change everything, my inherent personal bias that most of life’s answers lie in science. Whatever it was, I wasn’t alone. Here’s the riveting tale of how the most promising technology of the 21st century and the brilliant young woman behind it were exposed as a sham.
I’m a coffee fanatic, but even I have my limits. I can’t even imagine how bad this stuff must make you feel. At least you’re wide awake while you’re waiting for death.
In the words of Doug Stanhope, “You work five days to enjoy two. I don’t know if you gamble, but them’s shit odds. Three and a half should be your max, at least break even.”
More and more companies are moving to reduced workweeks, with Amazon the latest to do so. It’s long past time to make this the norm. With the advances we’ve made in productivity, there’s no reason we should be working more than four days a week.
Barry Ritholtz does a great job of breaking down the most recent JOLTS (Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey) report, and the findings are pretty clear: companies are going to have to start increasing wages. The pool of scared labor has dried up, and employees are moving into the driver’s seat in wage negotiations. It’s about time.
I’m actually surprised this hasn’t happened sooner. Burning Man used to be a bunch of hippies frying on acid and rolling around in the dirt. Now it’s the premier social event of the Silicon Valley faux-hip wannabes. It was only a matter of time before the Playa proletariat rose up against the douchelords.
On one hand, Wells Fargo did the right thing by firing everyone responsible for stealing from customers. On the other hand, ewwww. How does something like this happen without massive lapses in oversight? And how do you ever trust your bank again after something like this?
Who doesn’t fantasize about pulling up stakes and escaping to a remote island every once in awhile? Well, as someone who has actually done it, my only question is, “What are you waiting for???” Seriously. It might not solve all your problems, but living abroad (especially somewhere remote and/or exotic) really gives you a new perspective on life.
We’re big Twitch fans in our house. My kids can spend hours watching gamers teach them Xbox hacks, and I’ve learned more specialized coding on Twitch than any other platform. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Twitch (or something like it) dominate education in the coming years.
This is an interesting solution to a very serious problem. I know from personal experience that an aircraft carrier can adequately house thousands of people. I wonder about the expense, though. Those things aren’t cheap to operate, even tied up to the dock.
Speaking of ships, this thing is gangster AF. Impervious to both radar and sonar (rendering attack by submarine nearly impossible), it’s basically a ghost ship. A ghost ship with cannons and missiles, that is. Makes me wonder what else they’ve got in the works…
That’s it for this week guys. Let me know what you thought about this week’s links by hitting REPLY. As always, feel free to share this with anyone you think might enjoy it.
Have a tremendous weekend, and I’ll see you next week!
