Happy Saturday, y'all! You might be expecting a bunch of links about Tuesday’s upcoming election, but no. It’s hard not to be a little embarrassed about what our system has produced, and I’m just going to be glad when it’s over. That said, we’ve still got a lot of great stuff to talk about, so let’s get it on…

The Largest Bioterrorism Attack in US History Was An Attempt to Swing An Election
I feel I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least  share something election related this issue, so here it is. This is the tale of a cult in Oregon who took things too far in the pursuit of electoral influence. It’ll make you think twice about enjoying the salad bar next time you’re in a restaurant.
What We Know About Bizarre Crime Filming App Vigilante
Some apps you can just look at and go, “Umm…NOPE.” Vigilante is one of those. It’s an app designed to monitor 911 calls in real time, and then alert users of the app to incidents happening in their immediate vicinity. The app may or may not still be available, but this is the kind of thing that gets people hurt.
Google AI invents its own cryptographic algorithm; no one knows how it works
Yeah, this is bad. Google set up an experiment between three separate AI computers. Two of them were instructed to play a game of keep-away from the third, and then left to figure out how on their own. And boy did they…
Man searching for toilet stumbles across 49,000 year-old evidence of earliest human settlement in Australia
Scatological humor aside, the timeline on human civilization gets pushed further back once again.
How Jon Stewart Took Over The Daily Show and Revolutionized Late-Night TV: An Oral History
You have to be a fan of Jon Stewart and/or The Daily Show to make it all the way through this long one, but man what a story. I’d actually forgotten that Craig Kilborn was the Daily Show host for the first three years. It’s also amazing how many careers that show launched.
The Massacre at Monkey Hill
This is horrible and fascinating all at the same time. What happens when you take dozens of male primates out of their natural habitat, place them in captivity, and then introduce a handful of females? Monkey war, that’s what. And it sells a lot of tickets.
Addicted to Your iPhone? You’re Not Alone
Phone addiction is definitely a thing. We no longer know how to be bored. Here’s the guy who wants to change all that.
Elon Musk: Robots will take your jobs, government will have to pay your wage
I know he’s right about the first premise, I only hope he’s right about the second. One of the only fears I have for my kids is that automation will eliminate the majority of the jobs, and our capitalist model will morph into something like Elysium.
While I don’t buy into the whole Malthusian nightmare scenario, a lot of this stuff is too obvious to ignore any longer. The oceans will be fished out within a generation, deforestation is destroying vast swaths of our planet, and explosive population growth is all but guaranteeing terrible lives for billions of people. We need to reengineer capitalism for better outcomes, and we need to do it now.
That’s it for this week, folks. Feel free to share with anyone you think may enjoy it, and hit REPLY if you’d like to chat about any of the links.
