Happy Saturday, y'all! This week we’re covering Impossible Burgers, gene editing, and how to set up an uncrackable passphrase, among other things.
Let’s get it on…

Wow. That got weird in a hurry.
We all need more Steven Pinker in our lives. He points out something so fundamental in this short piece that I’m almost embarrassed I hadn’t considered it myself. I won’t spoil the surprise for you, but it’s something women have known all along.
While we likely don’t have to fear a Terminator scenario with AI, it’s highly likely that the rise of artificial intelligence will devastate the middle class. These are the problems we need to be thinking about now, because tomorrow may be too late.
You don’t hear this too often. Google may have shot themselves in the foot by overpaying their early Waymo engineers. Oops.
This could have a big impact on Americans planning to travel to Europe this summer. It’s not a done deal yet, but it’s close. We might be going back to the old days of having to secure a visa for each individual country we want to visit. This move is in response to America’s long standing failure to honor reciprocity agreements with the EU, and has nothing to do with the recent travel restrictions imposed by the Trump administration.
If you noticed that the Internet died for a few hours on Tuesday (a bit of an exaggeration, but it was pretty bad), we now know it was caused by a hapless engineer at Amazon typing the wrong thing into his or her keyboard. It hammered home for me how dependent we’ve become on AWS.
I couldn’t access Daveslist because Revue runs on AWS. I couldn’t access my contact management system because Hubspot CRM runs on AWS. I couldn’t upload photos to Slack because that function is hosted by AWS. In short, we identified a major single point of failure on the Internet on Tuesday.
Is the future of schooling entrepreneurship? For more than a century, American education has been geared toward cranking out employees. Is that about to change in the 21st century?
The Impossible Burger is starting to take over the West Coast, and the rollout strategy is pure genius: duplicate the one and only In-N-Out burger. Sign me up.
It’s really time to take your password game to the next level. Last week I suggested using a password manager like LastPass or Dashlane, but what should you use to secure those platforms? A random passphrase generated by dice rolls. Here’s how to do it.
This could be one of the greatest examples of perfectly timing a magic trick in history. This trick understandably sent the British public into a tizzy, and I daresay it might do the same even today.
This is the best way you can spend an hour this weekend. CRISPR is something you should get familiar with, because it’s going to fundamentally change our species. That’s not hyperbole. And there’s no one better to bring you up to speed on this ground breaking technology than the good folks at Radiolab.
That’s it for this week, y'all. Hit REPLY and let me know what you thought about this week’s selection. As always, feel free to share with anyone else you think might enjoy Daveslist.
Have a tremendous weekend, stay safe, and I’ll see you next Saturday!
