Facebook can track you with the dust on your camera lens.

I’ll admit that I don’t think GM when I’m thinking about cutting edge autonomous tech, but I have to hand it to them: this is pretty cool. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times: self driving cars can’t get here soon enough.

This article is the reason Daveslist is late today. I’ve written and then deleted this description no less than 20 times. I’ve tried to dial it back enough and hopefully I have.

Very little fills me with rage in the way prosecutorial overreach does. And this article hitting on the 5th anniversary of Aaron Swartz’s death kinda sent me over the edge. When I think about what Carmen Ortiz stole from all of us, I can only hope that she spends the rest of her miserable life contemplating the incalculable damage she did to our world in her quest to make a name for herself. Cops, prosecutors, and judges who wrongfully convict innocent people should be forced to serve the sentences of those whose lives they ruined. That would be justice.

I’ll try anything that promises to enhance my cognitive abilities, knowing full well that most of it is hooey. In this particular case, however, cordyceps mushrooms don’t get the credit they deserve. Like the author of this article, I drank mushroom coffee from Four Sigmatic (the author doesn’t say where he got his but I’m guessing it was Four Sigmatic) for over two weeks, and the results were pretty amazing. Since these mushrooms are actually pretty tough to source, they sell out pretty quickly. But if you’re looking to take your focus to the next level, treat yourself to a box if they’re in stock.

We’ve known for a while that there’s water on Mars, but it wasn’t until recently that we got a good idea of what it would take to extract and refine it. Turns out there are pretty vast reserves of what appears to be decent quality (i.e. better than Detroit) frozen water at or just below the surface of Mars at the higher latitudes. That could go a long way toward solving early habitation issues.

Google Photos is nothing short of sensational, and I’m always surprised by the cool new features they add to the platform. Here’s a great list of things you might not have known it could do. Biggest feature we use in our house? Casting our album to the TV as a sort of lock screen between shows. With almost 20 years of memories uploaded to the cloud, we can sit and watch it for hours on our big screen.

Is your phone number on the national Do Not Call Registry? Have you been getting a lot of calls lately from phone numbers that look just like yours (same area code, same exchange) that are an automated sales pitch when you answer them? Yeah, that’s totally illegal. And the companies doing it just don’t care.

I think it’s ironic that Facebook has designed and built the ability to do a bunch of creepy shit, and then demands credit for not doing it. Here’s yet another example of how invasive Facebook has the potential to be, and we just have to trust that they’re not bad guys.

If you’re like most folks, you probably picked up a grocery story bird at some point in the past week or two. They’re cheap, often delicious, and a big time saver. What you probably don’t think about is just how much profit those $5 rotisserie chickens drive storewide.
