Daveslist #11: Running Lochte, Autonomous Ubers, & the Last Big Frontier
By Daveslist • Issue #11
It’s been a bummer of a week with all the flooding down here, but it looks like the worst might be behind us (fingers crossed). We’re no strangers to natural disasters here in Louisiana, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t devastating to those affected. It’s going to be a long road home for many of our neighbors.
On a more positive note, we’ve got some great links this week…

If Ryan Lochte is the brains of your operation, things are going to go poorly for you.

Louisiana’s 1,000-year floods inundated 80,000 homes and businesses
4 trillion gallons of water. 20,000 rescues. Worst Louisiana flooding since Katrina. It has been absolutely brutal. One part of Louisiana got 32" of rain in three days. While we’re mostly fine here in New Orleans, things are far, far worse just up the road in and around Baton Rouge.
Uber’s First Self-Driving Fleet Arrives in Pittsburgh This Month
I knew it was coming, but I had no idea how quickly. Self driving Ubers will hit the streets of Pittsburgh in a couple weeks. They’ll have human drivers there to take over in case of emergency, but we may have just witnessed the death of private vehicle ownership in America.
This Guy Sold His Startup for $575 Million in Cash -- And Gets to Keep Every Penny
In this age of fetishizing start-ups who raise hundreds of millions of dollars in venture capital and sport valuations well into the billions, it’s cool to read a story about a true bootstrapper who got paid.
Bootstrapping (the practice of building your company without raising any outside money) is becoming a dying art. Markus Frind started the kind of company that was profitable from day one (online dating, in his case), so he never needed money from anyone else.
NASA just made all the scientific research it funds available for free
This could be huge. NASA has really embraced the crowdsourcing model over the past few years, enlisting the public to scan distant galaxies looking for anomalies. Freeing all their research is the logical next step, and could shorten the timeline on humanity becoming an interplanetary species.
Deep Learning Is Going to Teach Us All the Lesson of Our Lives: Jobs Are for Machines
The machines are coming for your job. No, seriously. They are. I just hope they come for mine first.
North Korea 'feeding workers crystal meth' to speed up skyscraper project
I’m all about productivity hacks, but this is a bit much.
The last big frontier
The zombie apocalypse takes different forms for different people. It might surprise you to learn that there is a quiet exodus afoot to the remote Northwest by some well heeled off-gridders. This is some Custer’s last stand shit right here.
Millennials outraged over TV show portraying millennials as outraged
You know I love my millennials and hate generalizations, but if there’s one thing that’s true of most of that generation it’s that they can be a wee bit thin-skinned. Trust me, guys, it’s more fun when you’re in on the joke.
How Scared Should I Be of Getting Punched in the Face?
It’s fair to say that I have a bit too much experience being punched in the face (not only was I a boxer for many years, I’ve been a platinum-level smartass since age 5). Is being punched in the face pleasant? Of course not. Is it something you should be afraid of? Absolutely not. Trust me. You think it’s going to be a lot worse than it actually is. Kinda like the dentist.
Tiger Saves Man From A Leopard Attack
This video is crazy on so many levels. First of all, what is this dude doing just hanging out with lions? Then keep an eye on the tiger, because he knows the leopard is up to no good from the jump. And you can tell the leopard is kind of a jerkoff just by everyone’s reaction to him – the tiger, the lions, the guy he tries to eat. This is just bananas.
That’s it for this week, guys. Hit REPLY and let me know what you thought about this week’s selection. As always, feel free to share with anyone you think might enjoy it.
