Daveslist #10: Stanhope, El Chapo, & the 3-Day Workweek
By Daveslist • Issue #10
We’ve got some top notch stuff this week. Let’s get to it…

Don Winslow is the poet laureate of drug cartel culture (he’d probably object to my characterizing him as such, but it is what it is). In this fascinating piece, he outlines how legal weed in the US caused the Mexican cartels to pivot into heroin, and then step it up even further with Fentanyl. He tells the story through the lens of Chapo Guzman’s history as a drug lord (he knows him personally), and the power vacuum Guzman left behind. This is grim stuff, but so well written that it sucks you in immediately and might be the best thing you read this week.
Of course they are.
All joking aside, this is pretty mind blowing. What is causing a star to lose .34 percent of its luminosity per year (an astonishing rate of loss)? An alien super civilization harvesting the star is certainly one explanation, but now that we’ve got some resources tasked with figuring it out we should have better answers in the next year.
Carlos Slim is the Chairman & CEO of Telmex and América Móvil (Mexico’s largest phone companies) and was the richest man on Earth from 2010-2013 (he remains in the Top 10). He’s the latest high profile figure to advocate reducing the workweek in order to spur the global economy, and his reasoning is solid. It’ll be interesting to see not only if, but how soon, the idea becomes mainstream.
Video of the Week. This is simply the best overview of automation and its impact on human labor that I’ve seen yet. You’ll come away with a much better understanding of where we’re heading.
I have the sudden urge to go camping with a few people I hate.
This is a subject that has grown near and dear to me. Education in America is in desperate need of a total overhaul, but there doesn’t appear to be the political will for it. Which is a shame, because it’s our children who will be less competitive in an increasingly competitive global market.
Doug Stanhope is my favorite comedian by a wide margin. His dim view of humanity, lack of patience for hypocrisy, and willingness to go so dark so fast resonate with me on a cellular level. This is a great little profile of the man himself. Once you’ve read it, I’d encourage you to head over to YouTube and watch his stuff, beginning with No Refunds. You might never speak to me again.
Many of us are aware of Tax Freedom Day, the day in late April or early May when you actually start working for yourself and not the government. But have you heard of Earth Overshoot Day? Because I hadn’t. Earth Overshoot Day is the day of the year where we’ve actually consumed all the resources the planet is able to replace for the year. Obviously hitting this milestone any day before December 31 is bad. This year we hit it on August 8, earlier than ever before. Yikes.
Not that you need an equation to opt for the largest pizza available (duh), but if you want to nerd out while Dominos is on the way this is how you measure the value of tangy, cheesy goodness. I used this just last night, in fact, when a pizza joint got cute and tried to sell me a 13"x9" deep dish instead of a 14" round pie for a dollar more. Suckers.
This is a fun experiment you can do in five minutes to see if they’re right. I’m won’t give anything away about the quiz itself because I don’t want to affect the outcome for you. While I’m not necessarily sold on the predictive nature of the quiz, I will admit that it got me right.
That’s it for this week, y'all. I hope you enjoyed the links. As always, I’d love to hear what you think, so just hit REPLY and I’ll get an email from you. If you know someone who might enjoy Daveslist feel free to share it with them.
